The Bobbs-Merrill Company owned the rights to the Raggedy Ann books and other related merchandise, though the Gruelle family retained rights to the original stuffed dolls. By a 1960 agreement with the author's widow, the publishing company acquired rights to the characters' intellectual property for products like books, while Myrtle Gruelle kept the rights for the stuffed doll versions, which were later licensed to other manufacturers.
Aladdin Industries was originally founded as "The Mantle Lamp Company" in 1908 by Victor S. Johnson, Sr., making non-electric, "Aladdin lamps". In 1914, Aladdin Industries was formed as a subsidiary to develop and sell thermos bottles and other insulated items. In 1949, The Mantle Lamp Company and Aladdin Industries merged, adopting the "Aladdin Industries" name, and moved their operations to Nashville, Tennessee. This is where they produced the first character-based school lunchbox featuring Hopalong Cassidy in 1950 that was a great success and led to more themed lunch boxes. In 2002, the Aladdin brand was acquired by Pacific Market International (PMI), a Seattle-based company. Today they continue to make lunchboxes, kerosene lamps, stoves, and thermal food and beverage containers.
